The Federal Trade Commission announced a final rule to combat review fraud, such as:
- Fake reviews
- AI reviews
- Bought reviews
- Fake likes and followers on social media
Businesses are also expected to:
- Disclose insider reviews (such as reviews from employees or family members)
- Not threaten customers to remove bad reviews
- Not reward customers for leaving good reviews
While all of this has always been part of an ethical review strategy, fraudulent activity could be penalized to protect consumers and ensure fair competition.
The FTC is an American organization, but businesses in all countries should take these guidelines to heart.
