Absolutely loved my four day workshop. Learnt so much. Went in as a complete beginner and left with an amazing table (stool used as a table :) ) . Such a great holiday destination alternative. Daisy generates such a lovely atmosphere and her and Andrew are super patient and compliment each other with different suggestions to helpful methods. Highly recommend.

The course was delivered by Daisy and Andrew. They are an amazing, patient and knowledgeable pair of artisan experts. When I was first thinking about the course, my assumption would be about what power tool to use. However, their approach of learning the process first by hand tools made me rethink that. It gives an element of respect for the wood and what the tree has provided. It also gives you time to step away from so many other things in a complicated life and appreciate the simplicity of working with your hands. The course is delivered close to the centre of Oxford in their own studio workshop. The atmosphere is calm and their approach is clear, supportive and conducive to learning whether you have any skills or are a complete novice. I did the weekend course that took me through making a mallet, using plaining and chamfering techniques as well as a tapered mortice joint. There is time to talk through your own projects and gain their advice about how to make them happen. Within this time they talked through how to achieve two other joints, which w could have a go at. Finally, their hospitality is great too, the coffee (proper not instant), snacks and lunch has the same attention to detail as their approach to delivering the course. I enjoyed and learned lots, but feel there is more to go, so I am hoping to join a 4 day course as soon as I have free time. Thoroughly recommend!!

I did the dove-tailing course because it’s 50 years since I last did something like it, and I needed to brush up on my technique! Small group classes, good tools to hand and excellent tuition - friendly and authoratative without being intrusive, supportive not critical. I came away proud of what I’d made and enormously encouraged to practise and improve on my efforts. Daisy and Andrew are a good team, experts at their craft, and their workshop/classroom is just that, no pretensions or pretences. Sign up, you won’t regret it!

I had such a wonderful experience with Daisy and Andrew on my woodworking weekend. Firstly, it was a perfect gift from my husband. Secondly, the communication before the course was second to none. Thirdly, the two days, themselves, exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere was really relaxed, while making us feel that we were in really safe, expert hands. The location itself is so convenient, and gorgeous. Sitting outside for lunch and listening to the stream was the cherry on top of the cake. I was able to make more than I imagined - a mallet, candle stick, wedge and learn both mortise and tenon, and dovetail, joints. There was structure, as well as flexibility, in the learning. Daisy and Andrew were really friendly and happy to answer any questions. Their style of teaching also complemented each other's. I would highly recommend Lula James to anyone looking to build their confidence and comfort with woodworking, and to come away with immediately applicable skills.

Great Vibes. Daisy and Andrew have though their experience in their careers and in their lives, created a wonderful environment for workshop attendees to learn and really importantly; not be afraid to make mistakes. From their openness and enthusiasm emanates ease and confidence. From the ever present smooth music gently playing in the background to the attention to everyone's individual needs, no stone has been left unturned to make this a five * course. I learned a tremendous amount technically in a short space of time but crucially I have come away with the confidence to give woodworking things a go. Thank you guys.

I attended this four day Dovetail & box making course as a gift from my wife for Christmas. I was a little apprehensive as I have no woodworking skills. Andrew and Daisy led us all through the days step by step encouraging us along the way and I came home with a lovely box at the end of it. They are so patient with everyone. They provide teas, coffees and a great lunch each day so all you need to take along is yourself. The set up they have is fantastic such a great workshop and in a very central location for Oxford City. I can highly recommend this experience for beginners and experienced people alike. You work at your own speed and capability.

A 4 day ‘Dovetail Box’ workshop with Daisy & Andrew which I recommend to others looking to learn or improve their skills. A very productive 4 days learning a variety of new skills. Daisy & Andrew were both very friendly, knowledgeable & excellent communicators through a mix of explanation, demonstration & whenever required ‘one to one’ specific training. I have learnt a mixture of new skills together with how to CORRECT some of what I now know were existing ‘bad habits’. I would thoroughly recommend this course for anyone e wanting to learn new skills and actually make something useful in the process.

As someone who has just started enjoying woodworking at home, I felt that it was important to learn some basics. Found the one day introductory course on the Lula James website and was so glad that I had. Excellent communications via email beforehand and on the day both Daisy and Andrew were so welcoming, helpful and encouraging and everything was done in such a relaxing way. The workshop was beautifully kitted out too. Have learnt so many skills which I have already put to good use at home on building some shelves. There was an excellent lunch thrown in and it was great to be able to make and bring home a door wedge, a keyring and a flower pot stand. Would 110% recommend this course to a budding woodworker - you certainly won't be disappointed.

Fantastic experience and a new hobby unlocked!! What a fantastic experience! I was bought the one day course as a present, and I didn’t know what to fully expect. The course lasted the whole day and we made a few items and got to grips with a number of hand tools. The day was fantastic. Daisy and Andrew were so passionate and knowledgeable about their craft and were helpful and patient. The workshop is cosy which means we were able to have 1:1 help and enjoyed a wonderful experience with others. Lunch was provided and a great ambience throughout the day. If you have ever thought about learning a new craft then give this a go, you won’t be disappointed.

As someone who was eager to improve my woodworking capabilities I enrolled in a Fundamental 1 day woodwork course with Lulu James in Oxford. Throughout the course, I discovered the beauty of working with wood and the satisfaction of crafting something with my own hands. From the start, I felt supported and encouraged by the instructors Daisy and Andrew and my fellow classmates. The course was well-structured and in between cups of tea and a generously provided lunch we began with the basics of woodworking, such as understanding different types of wood and their properties. The course then progressed to the use of fundamental tools, basic joinery techniques, and wood finishing. The instructors were knowledgeable and passionate about woodworking, and they provided clear instructions and guidance throughout the course. Their extensive knowledge in different woodworking techniques and materials allowed for a well-rounded learning experience. Their passion for woodworking was also contagious, motivating me to push my boundaries and explore new techniques. The course concluded with a sense of accomplishment, as I was able to create several impressive woodwork projects. Overall, I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in learning or improving their woodworking skills. It was good value for money and thoroughly enjoyable. Well done Daisy and Andrew.

I recently attended the 2-day weekend woodworking course as a complete beginner and would thoroughly recommend it for anyone interested in trying out the skill, it was brilliant - really enjoyable and I learned a huge amount! Daisy & Andrew were both great teachers; they talked through each stage of the project, and then gave us plenty of time to get on with it, and were always available for individual questions as you worked. They were obviously really knowledgeable and were able to answer all the questions I had, and really friendly to boot; they made the small group feel really welcoming, and we all learned from each other. I feel a lot more confident about getting some tools myself and putting it into practice more, and hopefully I'll be back again soon to try another course and learn some new skills!

I've done two courses with Daisy and Andrew and enjoyed both immensely. A one-day course and then the four-day stool making course. I learnt so much, with Daisy and Andrew's patient guidance, and was amazed at the quality of the end-product I was able to produce. It's both functional and looks great too. I made the stool for my little girl, and they helped me come up with ways to customise it for her - incorporating her initials into the design. I loved the course, and my daughter loves her stool - although she flips it over and sits in it, and asks me to drag her in her 'sled'!!

Brilliant short woodworking course in Oxford. Lula James Woodworking Creative. I had a most wonderful day at Lula James woodworking Creative in Oxford, along with four other students eager to learn wood working skills, from working with different kinds of wood to using the tools correctly. All had been given as gifts for a 1 day course using fantastic tools and techniques to create 3 different wooden objects to take home and be proud of. We made a mobile phone stand that goes on a keyring a door wedge which we planed down and the a stand to hold a plant on. I had used a plane, square, ruler, marking knife, marking gauge, 8116 chisels, Dozuki saw, quick release vice, to help create a cross lap Joint and lap joints. Daisy and Andrew's Knowledge, experience, patience, techniques and general loveliness guided us through the day with ease. We all at some point during the day had questions, and the answers were given. Working, hands on with the tools will help me to hone my skills in customer service. Thank you all at Lula James for making my day memorable and thank you for sending me on this lovely course with fantastic people Workshop Heaven. Kind Regards Lesley Workshop Heaven Ltd.

What a amazing and great experience .Went on the "4 Day course" making a beautiful hand crafted stool. Daisy & Andrew where exceptionally good at explaining how to use all the hand tools to make up the item. At all times giving us sound advice (3 of us on the course) no pressure with lovely intervals for cups of Tea/Coffee/Drinks and a lovely spread of Sandwiches/fruit for Lunch. What more can you ask for.... The day flew very quickly and to be sure "no rest for the wicked" Very satisfying when your stool was all fitted with (dowels/biscuit joiner) together prior to gluing but the "piece de resistance" was oiling the lovely wood (mine was Cherry Wood). Once again Daisy/Andrew thank you. Mich.

Absolutely loved the 4-day stool-making course. Daisy and Andrew are fantastic teachers, and it was interesting from the outset. I came in with very limited skill with hand tools, and felt like I left vastly more confident, and with a lovely bit of furniture to take away too! The small touches are great too - the regular (good) tea and coffee, snacks to start the day, and a fresh, filling lunch thrown in; the photos taken throughout the course for sharing afterwards; the bits of woodworking wisdom and book recommendations shared over lunch. I would love to book in again sometime!

A wonderful experience. Daisy and Andrew are not only skilled furniture makes but also great teachers. Each day of the stool making course started with coffee and pastries followed by instruction on what we'd be doing. The guidance and help was tuned to our individual needs as we each progressed. Although we did our own thing Andrew and Daisy were always watching in the background ready to offer direction and also comforting words when things weren't going quite to plan. The facilities, instruction, tools and wood were all first class. Lunches were also pretty good especially the Friday pizza from Sartorelli's. Really pleased that I could learn something new and now inspired to build some storage cupboards in my garage. Daisy and Andrew, thank you!

They were so knowledgeable and often got out pieces of wood and things that answered our curiosities. I am very small and the method was adjusted to accommodate me which was so appreciated! I loved it and I am hooked! I want to spend every Saturday in that adorable little workshop. Thank you!!!

Brilliant four-day stool making course. Highly recommended! The course blended small group instruction with time to work on the project, while Daisy and Andrew were always on hand for regular one-on-one tuition/problem solving. The result was that besides the project to make a stool - which is a really beautiful thing to take home! - the experience gave me a kind of understanding, plus skills and perspectives, which I know I will take away and use in the future. I also found that I could happily spend hour after hour in the workshop, either finding that wonderful flow state from concentration and focus, or joy in meeting and getting to know new people. Daisy and Andrew definitely know how to make it a good environment to be in - I had a bit of workshop experience before the course but this would have been the perfect introduction for someone completely new to everything. Four days was a really nice amount of time too; I got stuck in to the project and I was exhausted by the end of the week (in a good way).

Lula James made me a bespoke banner made from coloured wood veneer. It is absolutely beautiful and I am going to use and treasure it for years to come! But what impressed me most was their absolutely attention to detail - each letter had been carefully cut out and planned so that no two letters next to one another were the same colour. They made them quickly, stayed in touch and I couldn't be more pleased with what they made me. If you are looking for something unique, beautifully made and by people who are passionate about what they do and professional, Daisy and Andrew at Lula James are the people for you to talk to!

They took so much trouble to get the right design and wood for us to make sure we got exactly what we wanted. It took us a long time to find a company that could hand make our furniture and we are so pleased we found Lula James. We will be ordering more furniture from them in the future.
