James is a fantastic photography instructor. My favourite parts of his 101 and 201 courses were their associated homework assignments which motivated me to plan and take specific shots. They gave me a great foundation on using my camera and taking good photos.

James is an excellent teacher. He is very knowledgeable and has a great delivery style. The supplemental written materials are also excellent and include many example photographs that help to clearly explain the subject. This interactive course has given me a very good understanding of my camera’s features and a good basic foundation in photography. It was also a pleasure meeting and learning from the other students. I’m very happy I chose this course and don’t hesitate to recommend to others who are interested in developing their photography skills. Thank you James this wonderful opportunity to learn from you.

I did the 101 class online and James is a great teacher. He does an excellent job of connecting the technical aspects of the camera with the creative intentions of the desired photographs. The class size was small and the feedback was very helpful. James takes the time to explain the concepts and has a very in-depth practical knowledge.

A great beginner course! James explains new concepts and terminology well and in a way that helps you remember. Small class sizes are great as well that make time for one on one questions as well.

Studio was easy to find and there's municipal parking 2 blocks away. (Drove from out of town) I recently attended the Complete Lighting and Shooting Workshop. James was very thorough in explaining all the course content in a relaxed and fun environment. Class size was 8 students which allowed for personal interaction and attention. If any one is wanting to get into studio photography, this is a great workshop to take your photography skills to a new level.

Photography101 class with James was worth all the money and some more. James is such a professional, thorough and his explanations and instructions are on point. I felt engaged throughout all the classes and were so easy to follow. I feel like I have discovered a whole new world with my camera and looking forward to going out there and practicing everything I learned. Thinking about Photography 202 but for now just need to play a bit more with the camera. I highly recommend James's classes, you will get so much out of them I assure you. Thank you James, all the best!!!

James is an incredible teacher and highly knowledgeable. I enjoyed every course that was filled with practical insight into photographing any subject. His explanations make it easy to relate to, and the homework assignments were vital in helping me improve. His courses are personalized, taking the time to make sure you understand the mechanisms in your camera. I highly recommend this course to anyone simply looking to freshen up their camera skills or for beginners. I look forward to not using the ‘auto’ mode and experimenting with my camera!

Excellent course for the beginner and intermediate photographer. James is an excellent instructor and can take a complex topic and translate it into meaningful, clear sections so that it is meaningful. Combined with his patience and listening ability the course is well worth the investment. The homework assignments support the material discussed in class and weekly critique helps to drive the point of the exercise home. Definitely worth your time.

I was first hesitant to sign up for the photography 101 through cameraschool. However I am extremely happy I did this. Our instructor was James and he was an excellent teacher. He was full of knowledge and exceptional at what he does. I enjoyed doing the home work assignments. I can't wait to see what the future holds for me. I am super excited to put more time and effort into learning photography.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Photography 101 course. James was a great instructor and made the introductory course very instructive and easy to follow. I tried many times unsuccessfully to learn on my own, even with some online video courses, but to no avail. James simplified the approach to photography and the live class made the learning impactful. I look forward to the level two course.

I was so pleased with Photo101 that I signed up for and just recently completed Photo201 as well. James is extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. The course material is very well laid out and easy to follow. The hands-on activities are enjoyable and the feedback provided by James is helpful and informative. I just completed the online Photography 101 course and was so pleased with the value I received for my money with this course. James is excellent at describing the features within your individual camera to help you get the most out of your equipment. His way of explaining how the mechanics of the equipment works, makes it seem much less daunting too. He makes himself available at the end of each class for any questions you may have and makes each class enjoyable to attend. Valuable tips on homework assignments to continue your improvement as a photographer are also very helpful. I have signed up for the Photography 201 class and am looking forward to taking my learning further! Very worthwhile class to take if you’ve just purchased a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. Thank you!

I took James’s 3-week 101 Bootcamp virtually. I had zero photography experience and now feel comfortable using many of the functions on my camera. Since class sizes are small, James can take the time to show functions and options for each user’s individual camera and also respond to each homework assignment. Will be back to take the next class!

Wow! I would give six stars if I could. I had taken beginner's photography classes before with great pro teachers in Montréal and I thought I would try this school as a refresh. Honestly, I was flabbergasted by James' teaching method. He is absolutely the best teacher i know. Not only does he master the theory, he is above all, the best so far to explain in a very simple ways confusing stuff as shutter speed and ISO, focal length, etc., and make it clear and simple. I am definitely taking the 201 class next September!

I have owned a DLSR for years but was always apprehensive about the complexity of it. James was was able to introduce the details about the tool in a way that was related to the photography topics that we were discussing in a way that was non-threatening. James is open to questions and provides feedback in a non judgemental way that serves to make us think about the topics at hand. I look forward to taking the next level course and would definitely recommend cameraschooI.ca and James for those new to DSLR as well as those looking to improve their craft.

I just completed the photo 101 course with James. I am looking to improve the quality of my photos going forward and decided a course would be beneficial. This course was very informative and James is such a wonderful teacher. He is knowledgable and has such an ease when it comes to making things that are complicated become easy for the students to understand. Homework was assigned each week and the class would start with review of the assignment giving helpful comments as to how things could have been improved. This exercise was very instructive even watching the critique of other class members homework photos. At the end of class he would always stay around to receive any unanswered questions. I was sad to have the course end and I have now signed up for Photo 201 with James and look very forward to the next level of teaching. James also showed some of his portrait photography during class, and it is clear he is an accomplished photographer. This 2 hour class a week for 4 weeks was most enjoyable!

I took the online 101 with James and it was fantastic. I learned so much about how to use my camera more effectively, and how to control the settings to get the creative effect i want. I am a hobbyist and have read many photography books. But this course through the assignments, made me accountable. It meant getting out, experimenting with lots of photos and applying the lessons. Getting feedback from James on how well the lesson was learned was valuable. He is a great instructor. James teaches the same material daily, and yet the online class never felt robotic, the teaching delivery was never rote and boring. He was familiar with everyone's camera settings in our group. He teaches at a good pace for the group, provides individual instruction and is always available to answer questions after class, or via email. I am looking forward to 201! James - When Covid is a distant memory, you need to have Henry's fly you to Vancouver to teach in person lightning and shooting in RAW.

James did an excellent job guiding us to unlock the power of some of the camera's more powerful features: focusing, depth of field, and motion; and how to use these features to tell more interesting stories with our pictures. The homework assignments helped provide us with practical experience. The organization was excellent. I had understood some of the concepts before, but through the course received practical tips to use the more creative modes on my camera and the confidence to try things out. Thanks James!

I signed up for the 101 class and finished it last week. I am extremely grateful and happy that I had the opportunity to learn from James. James is a very fun, engaging and knowledgable instructor. All email communications and reading materials were provided in advance, which has been really helpful to reference when needed. The BEST part was the homework! We had the opportunity to get creative and apply the knowledge learned when taking photos. I truly appreciated and loved the feedback as it helped me understand where I could improve and where I did great! Right after I finished the 101, I signed up for the 201 class which will start in March! So excited! Today, I had the opportunity to participate in the “Why Shoot in Raw” webinar. Short and to the point seminar with lots of information. I look forward to many more to come! For anyone that is looking for an engaging session, James is your person!

Now that I'm retired, I have more time to focus on digital photography -- one of several hobbies to keep me occupied and on the path of continuous learning. Of course, there is a lot to absorb but Henry's and their association with CameraSchool.ca makes it fun and practical. I recently took part in the 6-hour Complete Lighting and Shooting Workshop Event as taught by James Ogilvie and had a great time. Best of all, no previous studio experience required! I learned about the type of equipment needed to light a scene (both in studio and outdoors -- weather permitting) and how to modify light for artistic effect. Some time was spent discussing light and its importance when photographing people, the majority of the time was spent actually taking photos of professional models under various setups (athletic, portraiture, glamour, fashion, etc). This, I think, is what distinguishes the workshops offered at CameraSchool.ca from all others. You learn some core principles but the emphasis is about applying these principles in real life situations. While I don't have plans to open a studio myself, I'm confident the information I learned from this workshop will carry over to other areas of my photography (as when taking photos of still-life or shooting outdoor portraits). If you want to learn more about studio lighting or simply want to expand your photographic knowledge, then I highly recommend this course!

James was a great teacher, no matter how silly my questions felt he answered them above and beyond. He knew when to go into detail on things and when not to based on the student's interest. Definitely was worth the time + money, I feel like I can actually take better pictures now and that my fancy camera isn't just a glorified point and shoot. He also tailored parts of the class around the types of camera's each student has to make it less of a guessing game about which buttons/menu options you should be using.

I am in the process of taking the Photo101 4 week course led by Jim. I am a rank amateur whose experience today taking good photographs has been hit and miss and so I decided to take this course. Why? The course is 4 sessions of 2 hours each except the first one which goes for 3 hours, and ours was delivered on-line due to COVID. To be frank I preferred this format. The curriculum is perfect for me. Lots of interactions with the other class mates and lots of excellent feedback. I like Jim's style, the flow was well paced and the amount of pre-work done by Jim is appreciated. ( You let him know what camera you have and he takes this into consideration when he's discussing settings in the course). The value provided is great.

The curriculum is well thought out and structure to learn quickly, addressing the important things first and in sequence. The minimal homework is easily done in < 30 minutes and reinforces each class. The physical environment is very comfortable, well light and equipped with camera’s connected to an overhead projector. Most importantly, instructor Jim Ogilvie is exceptional! Very experienced and knowledgeable, his skill is taking something that can be complex and daunting, and packaging and delivering it is a clear and concise manner. Hi passion for the subject keeps the class engaging and he always gets to the core of students question and our misunderstanding. Jim also blends the art of “what to think about” when planning a shot and the science of “how to make the camera perform” to do precisely that. High Value!!

This is a great workshop for anyone who wants to understand basics of lighting. Although most of my experience was taking landscape pictures, I wanted to get into portrait photography and found this workshop gave me a great foundation to understand the different technologies of speed/strobe lighting and to work with real models in different lighting scenarios. James has a great style of teaching and together with being able to take photographs of live models in different lighting setups is an excellent way to learn. On top of the hands on work, you get follow-up documentation with student notes that includes the technical details James reviews in the workshop, as well as the layout of the lighting used in the workshops as a reference with the exact setup of the lighting used for the pictures you took in the workshop. I’ve already recommended this to some of my photography friends.

I can't speak highly enough about the courses offered by Camera School with Jim! The 5 week 101 and 201 courses provide a foundation for novices to pro enthusiast! Jim's teaching style and class environment is welcoming and fun! Never a dumb question! Always lots of feedback to help improve your photographs. Just loved the 2 courses so much that I enrolled in the 'Lighting Workshop.' The pace and organization of materials in the 6 hour workshop was well thought out and thorough. The workshop includes participating in various photo shoots with professional models both in the studio and outside in a nearby park. By the end of the session you have lots of new knowledge, professional photos taken by you and .pdf notes for future reference. So great to have a great instructor! I highly recommend Camera School to photographers interested in learning how to 'create' (not just take) photos!!!

My family of three took the 101 camera course with James - we thought it was great! The class was just the right size - plenty of individual attention, but enough students to learn from each others' questions. James wrangled a range of ages, experience and learning styles easily so that the weekly classes were fun and informative for everyone. The skills we've learned have stayed with us and improved our photography (and comfort with our cameras) so much. Recommended - thanks, James!

Recently I was taking Jim’s Photo 101 and just completed his Photo 201 at Henrys in Toronto last week. His explanations are easy to follow, and his materials are shot and clear. Before I met Jim, I was struggling to understand the exposure triangle. In other words, somehow I thought I knew how to take a clear and sharp image but eventually failed. After learning some basic skills from Photo 101, all of a sudden, I started taking better pictures, and as a result of this unexpected improvement, the number of followers on my Instagram has increased tremendously. And after completing Photo 201, now I feel more confident in my photography abilities and am ready to start my photography journey on my own. I was so lucky to have Jim as my instructor. He is the best among all other instructors I have met.

I have been learning with Jim for over a span of 3.5 years starting with his basic 101 workshop, then 201 and finally his complete lighting and shooting workshop. I didn't even think about looking for another resource to learn from once I took my first course with him despite the abundance of options in Toronto and online education. You just know when you find the right teacher! As I developed my portfolio, purchased a better camera (after a decade with a point-and-shoot) and was ready to gain a deeper understanding and start using more tools for professional results, his encouraging and passionate teaching style gave me a solid foundation to keep growing. Currently, at my job as a multi-media marketing director I feel much more confident to take on projects asked of me and I finally started my work as a free-lance photographer, as well. Every class I took with him had a very beneficial hands-on component and his pre and post-class notes provided all that I needed to refer back to in the long run. He was so kind to respond to my questions even months after the workshops were done. His great sense of humor is just the cherry on top! 🍒 Highly recommended!
